Answers to Common Questions

When is Registration?

Registration for Spring Baseball and Softball is early January of each year.

What if We Miss Registration?

If you missed registration, there is a late registration process. However, late registration always creates a severe burden on the league volunteers trying to assemble teams and schedule games. In addition, late registrations are only taken on an "as needed" basis to fill rosters. PLEASE MAKE EVERY ATTEMPT TO BE AT REGISTRATION!

When are Tryouts?

Tryouts are really called Skills Evaluations, since every child that wants to participate in Little League is allowed to play. Skills Evaluations are held during the first part of February.

What are Skills Evaluations (Tryouts)?

The Skills Evaluation is a method for measuring the skills of each player. This allows each manager to assess each players potential and make an informed decision as he assembles his team during the draft process.

What if I Don't Attend Skills Evaluations?

Any player who does not attend Skills Evaluations:

  • Will not be eligible to play on the All-Star tournament team
  • Will not be available to be drafted but will be randomly assigned to a team
  • Will not be available to be traded

What if I Want to Try for a Higher Division?

"Qualified" players wishing to “play up” are REQUIRED to attend the Skills Evaluation at the level at which they hope to play.

Local league rules state:

  • Qualified players may tryout for a higher level but are not guaranteed of being drafted at that level.
  • A “qualified” player must be league age 10 for Majors; 8 for Minors and 6 (with at least one year of Little League T-Ball) for Farm.  Please see Change in League Age Date regarding league age.

What is the "Draft"?

The draft process is method in which the managers select their teams. There are specific rules mandated by Little League International that we must follow as part of our charter.

During a division draft, each manager is given a list of eligible players from which to pick from. Selection is made in a "serpentine process" where Manager #1 picks a player , then Manager #2 and so on until the last manager has pick a player. This ends a "draft round" and the process reverses, with the last manager starting the next round. This continues until all teams have selected a pre-determined amount of players.

What if I, as a Parent, want my Player on a Specific Team?

You are entitled to make a request at the time of registration. However, each manager is entitled to select the players he / she wants on their team. There is no guarantee that any request will be honored.

What if I want my Player on Another Team?

Only players may request to be moved from one team to another. This is only done in extreme situations where there is a conflict between the coach and the player. Any such move is made within a division and will be made only after appropriate League approval.

Why was My Player Not Picked in a Higher Division?

Each manager drafts his team from the list of eligible player candidates. The reason for the skills evaluation is for each manager to have a reasonable basis for making an informed choice as to which players to select. There are usually a large pool of talented players from which to choose from.

For example, in the Majors each manager is required to draft 1) all 12 year old players and then 2) draft any player who played in Majors the previous year. If the division has 6 teams of 12 players for a total of 72 player positions, the total 12 year old and returning players could exceed 50 players. This leaves only 22 positions to be filled by 11 or 10 year old players, while there may be more than 120 10 and 11 year old players to choose from.

Beginning in the 2006 season, our league is following the procedures adopted by most little leagues and is no longer mandating that certain aged players be placed in certain divisions. Thus, it is possible this year that not all 12 year olds will be in majors and not all 11 year olds will be in AAA minors. This process has been changed to make sure that the level of play at each division is more consistent and that players are grouped more according to skill level.

When are games scheduled?

Games are scheduled to begin in March and end in May, usually at the same time school is over.

Why are games played so late?

There is a limited amount of time that we are allowed to play on each field. The ball fields belong to the school district, and even though we maintain them, they have first priority to play on them. With sunset occurring before 7:00 PM and school games ending after 5:45, we must play many of our games under the lights after 7:45 PM.

Do we play on Sundays?

Every attempt is made to not schedule any games on a Sunday. Occasionally, a make-up game will be re-scheduled for a Sunday with the approval of the two team managers. Many teams opt to have practices on Sundays, as most fields are available.

What is the Refund Policy?

Cactus Foothills North Little League respects the rights of parents to withdraw their players for any reason and at any time. The refund policy of Cactus Foothills North Little League is as follows:

  1. If a player withdraws after registering, but before the draft has occurred for his / her eligible division (Juniors, Majors, AAA, AA, Farm, etc) you are entitled to a refund of your registration fees, less $25.00. Registration Fees do not include late fees or other payments.
  2. There is no refund if a player withdraws after the draft has occurred for his / her eligible division (Juniors, Majors, AAA, AA, Farm, etc).

Why do you keep $25 of my registration fee?

Once a player is registered with our league, certain decisions are made and expenses incurred for every player who is registered. With more than 500 players registering and in excess of 40 teams needing to be formed, uniforms and team supplies are ordered based upon the number of registrants. We also pay for insurance and Little League fees based upon our player head-count. Even a small percentage of withdrawals can dramatically affect our League operations and expenses.
